Custom Software And Workflow Help For Chicago Area Businesses

A Chicago area business rarely operates inside one set of walls. An order is taken in the city, stocked in a suburban warehouse, delivered across a state line, and recorded somewhere different at each step. Talegen fixes the space between those steps: we map how work actually moves through your business, connect the tools that should be talking to each other, and build custom software where off-the-shelf runs out. We are based in York, Pennsylvania, work with SMBs across the country remotely, and arrange on-site visits when a project calls for one.

If Any Of This Sounds Like Your Week

These are the workflow patterns that make an owner call somebody like us. If you recognize your business below, the free consultation is the fastest way to get specific about it.

The Proposal Everyone Signed Is Not The One In Delivery

A client signs a proposal, the delivery team starts from an older version saved during drafting, and nobody notices until a deliverable comes back wrong. If you run a consulting or technical services firm, you have lived some version of this: documents in one tool, schedule in another, and the dispute costing more hours than the original mistake.

The Order Crossed The State Line, The Record Did Not

Sales takes the order in Illinois, the warehouse allocates it out of Indiana, and the delivery confirmation lands in a third system or an inbox. Your team retypes the details at each step, and the customer hears about it the one time the copies do not match. That gap is a connection problem, not a staffing problem.

Friday's Change Order, Thursday's Schedule

A signed change order should update the estimate, the schedule, and the field crew's work list. In a lot of construction offices it updates whichever file the estimator remembers, and the crew shows up with the old scope. The rework lands on you, and the schedule slips in the middle of a metro full of alternatives for your client.

Illinois: Freight-Scale Economy, Small-Business Base

Illinois' Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity puts advanced manufacturing, next-generation agriculture and food processing, and transportation, distribution and logistics among the six high-growth industries in its 2024 Economic Growth Plan, which also notes that roughly a quarter of all U.S. freight traffic passes through the Chicago rail corridor. The state's business base is mostly small: the Census Bureau's 2023 County Business Patterns counts 322,415 employer establishments across Illinois, and 94.2% of them have fewer than 50 employees, including 12,465 manufacturing locations. Those are business locations, not companies, and they cover the whole state rather than the metro.

Thirteen Counties, Two States, One Metro Count

The Census metro area behind the figures here, Chicago-Naperville-Elgin, spans thirteen counties in Illinois and Indiana and counts 248,519 employer establishments, 94.1% of them with fewer than 50 employees. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning, whose planning area is seven counties in northeastern Illinois, reported in its October 2025 freight assessment that the region's trucking industry alone runs more than 12,000 establishments with 108,000 employees. Its seven-county region and the Census metro are different areas measured in different ways, so the numbers stand side by side rather than added together. For an owner, that cross-lines geography is the daily reality: the sales desk, the warehouse, and the customer are rarely in the same system, let alone the same county.

Professional, scientific, and technical services is the largest sector in the metro data: 32,828 employer establishments, most of them small firms. A consultancy or engineering practice lives on proposals, deliverable schedules, and billing that sit in different tools, which means somebody retypes the same numbers several times a week and the error surfaces at invoice time. Talegen maps one proposal from first draft to final invoice, finds the handoff that causes the most rework, and fixes that handoff first, whether the fix turns out to be an integration, an automation, or a small custom tool.

Wholesale trade counts 12,261 employer establishments in the metro, many of them serving customers on both sides of the Illinois-Indiana line. An order passes from sales desk to warehouse to carrier to accounting, and each handoff is a chance for the record to disagree with what is actually on the truck. Talegen traces one order from quote to proof of delivery, pinpoints where duplicate entry happens, and connects the systems so the office and the warehouse work from the same status.

Construction counts 22,707 employer establishments in the metro, from remodeling crews to commercial general contractors. The familiar failure: a change order goes out Friday, the estimate updates Monday, and the project schedule still shows the old scope a week later, with the field crew working from whatever version reached them. Talegen maps who updates which record and where a change stops being visible, then recommends the fix that fits the tools you already run.

What Happens When You Book The Free Consultation

Thirty minutes, your systems, one workflow. That is the whole agenda.
  1. Step 1

Bring The Example, Not A Wish List

Have the real case ready: the proposal that went sideways, the order that got retyped three times, the change order the field never saw. A walkthrough of how the work moves today beats a list of features you think you need.

  2. Step 2

    We Map The Handoffs Live

On the call we sketch where each record travels, who updates it, and where it stops being visible to the next person. In a metro that spans two states and a lot of warehouses, the break usually sits between office, warehouse, and field.

  3. Step 3

You Leave With A Map And A First Fix

You get a plain-language map of the workflow, the two or three handoffs worth fixing first, and an honest read on whether the answer is an integration, an automation, a custom piece, or nothing new at all.

Questions

Do You Work With Businesses On The Indiana Side Of The Metro?+

Yes. The Census metro area referenced here spans both states, and the work follows your workflow rather than a boundary. A distributor with an Illinois sales desk and an Indiana warehouse is exactly the kind of crossed-lines process a consultation can map.

We Already Own Software For Each Part Of The Job. Why Is That Not Enough?+

Each tool probably does its own job well. The cost sits between the tools: re-keying, mismatches, and status nobody trusts. The audit starts at the handoffs rather than proposing a new platform on day one.

How Does A Pennsylvania Company Work With A Chicago Business?+

The same way we work with teams across the country: calls, screen shares, and access you control, remote by default. On-site visits are arranged when a project genuinely needs one, not as a matter of course.
